THE CRUISE

A Full Day on the Catamaran

Seven hours is a long time on the water. On a catamaran, it is exactly long enough — and never too much. The stable, spacious deck turns a full sailing day into something genuinely restful.

The Full-Day Catamaran Cruise is built on a simple idea: that the best way to spend a Cretan summer day is to give it to the sea, on a boat that lets you actually relax. We cast off from the Old Venetian Harbour at ten in the morning and return shortly before sunset — long enough to swim three times, eat well at anchor, and feel the day settle into the slow rhythm only a catamaran can give.

The route follows the Bay of Chania west and north. Our first stop is Maherida Beach on the Akrotiri peninsula, a tiny southwest-facing bay whose water is famously clear. From there we sail to Thodorou, the protected islet with its 16th-century Venetian fortress ruins and the rare Kri-Kri wild goats visible on its cliffs. Lunch — a Cretan-inspired meal prepared on board — is served at anchor in the cockpit of the catamaran, with wine or beer in the shade. The final stop is Lazaretta, the small islet off Nea Chora with its sandy beach and quiet waters.

What makes the day on a catamaran particularly different is what you do between the stops. The wide bows give you sun mattresses for lounging. The shaded cockpit gives you a place to eat without baking in the heat. The level deck means no one is gripping the rail in the wind. By the time we sail back into the harbour around five, you will have seen more of the Cretan sea than most visitors see in a week — and felt none of the fatigue a full-day cruise normally brings.

The Day Hour by Hour

Your Full-Day Catamaran Itinerary

A typical schedule for the full-day catamaran cruise — adjusted on the day to the wind, the light, and your preferences.

Embark at the Old Venetian Harbour

Meet the captain at the wooden pier in Chania’s historic harbour. Settle into the spacious deck of the catamaran, choose your spot on the bow mattresses or in the shaded cockpit, and we cast off.

First swim stop — Maherida

We anchor in the tiny southwest-facing bay of Maherida on the Akrotiri peninsula. Drop into some of the clearest water in the area, climb back up the catamaran’s easy ladders, and dry on the wide deck in the morning sun.

Sail to Thodorou & lunch on board

We sail on to Thodorou Island, the protected reserve with its Venetian fortress ruins and Kri-Kri wild goats on the cliffs. At anchor, the captain serves a Cretan-inspired lunch in the shaded catamaran cockpit, with wine or beer to accompany.

Final stop — Lazaretta

The day’s last anchor is at Lazaretta, the small islet off Nea Chora. A second long swim, a glance up at the chapel of Saint Nicholas, and a last hour of sea on the catamaran’s deck before turning home.

Return to the Old Venetian Harbour

We sail back into the harbour past the lighthouse and tie up at the wooden pier — sun on your shoulders, the day full, the catamaran slipping quietly back into Chania.

Note — Times shown are typical. The exact stops, durations and order can shift with the wind and with your preferences. The captain confirms the day’s plan when you arrive on board.

The Catamaran

Our sailing catamaran is built for exactly this kind of day. Twin hulls keep the deck stable and level, even when the wind picks up. Sun mattresses on the bows, a generous shaded cockpit for lunch, and the kind of space that makes a seven-hour day feel like a luxury rather than an endurance.

Unlike many catamaran charters in the area, ours departs directly from the Old Venetian Harbour — not from Kolymvari or other surrounding ports.

DESTINATIONS

The Three Stops of the Day

Each of the three anchor points on the full-day catamaran cruise has its own character — together they make the full picture of the Bay of Chania.

Menies Beach

A remote pebble beach on the Rodopou peninsula — for custom full-day cruises along the wild coast.

Maherida Beach

A tiny southwest-facing bay on the Akrotiri peninsula — white sand, turquoise water, the first swim of the day.

Thodorou Island

A protected nature reserve with 16th century Venetian ruins and the rare Kri-Kri wild goats.

Lazaretta Island

A small islet off Nea Chora with Venetian-era ruins, a chapel of Saint Nicholas and a sandy beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Full-Day Catamaran Cruise lasts approximately 7 hours, from 10:00 AM departure to 5:00 PM return. The day is unhurried, with three swim stops, a Cretan-inspired lunch served on board, and plenty of time to enjoy the spacious deck of the catamaran.

The classic route includes three stops: Maherida Beach on the Akrotiri peninsula, Thodorou Island with its Venetian fortress ruins and rare Kri-Kri goats, and Lazaretta Islet near Nea Chora. The route can be adapted to the weather and your preferences.

Seven hours on the water is significantly more comfortable on a catamaran than on a monohull. The twin hulls keep the deck stable and level, the generous space allows everyone to spread out, and the shaded cockpit gives you a place to rest between swims. It is the preferred choice for families with children and larger groups.

A Cretan-inspired lunch is prepared on board and served at anchor, accompanied by wine or beer. Fresh fruit, water and soft drinks are available throughout the day. The meal is shared on the spacious catamaran cockpit, with the sea around you.

The catamaran accommodates up to 10 guests for the full-day cruise. The boat is private — your group sails alone. The catamaran’s space is especially comfortable for groups of 6 to 10.

Yes. The full-day catamaran cruise is one of our most family-friendly options. The catamaran’s stability eliminates seasickness concerns for most children, the deck space gives them room to move safely, and children’s life jackets are provided. We adapt the day’s pace around younger guests when needed.

1 million stars. Family owned and operated. We were recommended this service by friends who came to Crete last year. My husband and I chartered the catamaran just the two of us. Nikos was friendly and communicative from our first WhatsApp message. The lunch spread was divine and he took us to incredible spots. I would come back to Crete just to take this tour again.

Excellent experience, first class service, boat and trip.
Myself along with three friends took a private hire with Notos and it was a fantastic day out. We chose the catamaran. It was beautiful, spacious and very stable and smooth for anyone who is uncertain on sailing boats. Our captain Nikos, was the perfect host, attentive, informative and very kind. He also introduced us all to a sup which he has and is free to use. We had such fun, it was hilarious! We spent more time falling off it than standing on it which is more difficult than it looks until you find your balance. Sit on it! It's much easier! Our friend Alison was the most successful, she mastered it!
I highly recommend Notos. Personal service and a beautiful boat, you won't be disappointed.
Thank you captain from all of us.
Ten out of ten. Loved this - we booked a day sail with captain Nikos. It was two of us (husband and wife) and that was absolutely perfect. We had a few stops for snorkeling and swimming, and Nikos provided plenty of wine, water, and a delicious and filling light lunch. The stand up paddleboarding is also an option, or as we know it better, fall down paddleboarding.

Ahead of time, I truly thought I would get tired of swimming at each spot - but I didn't!

This was really, really wonderful. We were a group of 6 people, including my 11 and 14 year old nephew and niece. Alexander and his brother Nikos were FANTASTIC guides. They are friendly, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable about the history of the island and about sailing in general. We enjoyed our conversations with them and the gorgeous views as they sailed us out to the island where we had the option to jump into the water and swim, snorkel, and paddleboard. They offered us delicious fresh fruits including beautiful ripe locally picked cherries, pastries, and drinks. We felt like we were sailing with newly made friends. I would highly recommend this as a part of your trip to Chania! You get to see so much and it’s breathtakingly beautiful!
