The Northern Edge of the Rodopou Peninsula

Menies Beach lies on the north-eastern shore of the Rodopou peninsula — the long, mountainous finger of land that reaches out into the sea between the gulfs of Chania and Kissamos. About forty-five kilometres north-west of Chania town, it sits at the mouth of the Foundas Gorge, a narrow ravine that opens onto a small bay framed by dramatic cliffs and rock formations. The whole peninsula is part of the European NATURA 2000 protected network, and Menies sits at the heart of its quietest, least-touched part.

The bay itself is small. A short curve of pebbles, ringed by stone, with water that is deep, exceptionally clear, and a particular shade of blue that locals will tell you is unmistakable. Because the bay faces north-east, it is naturally sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds of the area — the sea here is often calm even when the rest of the coast is restless.

The Sanctuary of Diktynna

Menies is sometimes called by its older name: Diktynna. The name comes from the ancient sanctuary that once stood on this stretch of the peninsula — a temple dedicated to Diktynna, also known as Britomartis, a Minoan goddess later associated with Artemis in the Greek pantheon. According to legend, Britomartis was a young goddess of hunting and the wild who threw herself from the cliffs into the sea to escape the unwanted advances of King Minos. She was caught by fishermen’s nets — diktya in Greek — and from this she was given her second name, Diktynna, “the lady of the nets”.

The sanctuary became one of the most important religious sites in western Crete, in continuous use through the Hellenistic and Roman periods. A Roman-era temple was eventually built on the site, paved with marble and adorned with statues. Today only fragments remain — stones, foundations, scattered remnants in the dust above the bay — but the place still carries the weight of being one of the oldest sacred ground on this coast.
